Vocaloid Profile Meiko and Kaito

Meiko

Meiko was the first vocaloid to be sold by Crypton Future Media and also the first sold in Japan, having been released for sale on November 5, 2004.  She was named after the Japanese singer who supplied her voice samples - Haigō Meiko (link).  Her voice is said to be suitable for any musical genre.

Crypton did not provide any details of Meiko’s profile, or even her age.  She is usually portrayed as a middle-aged woman in illustrations by artist KEI, although he has been quick to point out that this is only his interpretation.  Her "character item" is One Cup Ozeki, a type of saki usually sold through vending machines.

Meiko's box art (pictured on left) was created by Shogo Washizu (Wasshi), a former employee at Crypton.

In April 2008, a producer created the derivative character Sakine Meiko
, using Meiko's voicebank modified to make her sound younger.

Meiko never gained the level of popularity that Miku did and, despite the best efforts of her users to expand her vocal range, she dropped off Crypton’s best-seller list by 2010. She was nevertheless considered to be a commercial success. Crypton hasn’t given an official sales figure for Meiko, but it can be assumed that she sold at least 1000 units.

Kaito

Although developed together with Meiko, Kaito was not released for sale until February 17, 2006 - more than 15 months after Meiko's release.  His name was selected after Crypton invited ideas from vocaloid fans. The name Kaito was chosen from the list of suggestions because it went well with Meiko and it was easy to pronounce in English.  Samples for Kaito's voice bank were provided by Naoto Fūga (link)

Kaito's box art (pictured on right) was created byTakashi Kawasaki.

Kaito was initially considered to be a failure in commercial sales after selling only 500 units.  At the time of his release, vocaloid technology was still relatively unknown, and the limited demand was mostly for female voices.  There was however a resurgence of interest in Kaito about two years after his release and he became one of the top sellers in 2008
.

On January 1, 2012, the Vocaloid 3 version of Kaito went on sale.  It contains three Japanese voicebanks (Straight, Soft and Whisper) and one English voicebank.
